Mainstream Conspiraloons #734 - Greece

Athens, Greece, on the outskirts of a riot, 1500BST:

"...it's not a problem for me and my colleagues to be hounded off demos as "representatives of big capital", "Zionists", "scum and police informers" etc. But to get this reaction from almost every demographic - from balaclava kids to pensioners - should be a warning sign to the policymaking elite. The "mainstream" - whether it's the media, politicians or business people - is beginning to seem illegitimate to large numbers of people.

As one old bloke put it to me, when I said: "Don't you want us to report what's happening to you?" - "No."

He was quite calm and rational as he waved his hand in my face: "It's too late for that."

Good for paul Mason

Point 1, I followed your link and read Mason's blog piece. At the end I saw that he gave me/us the opportunity to post comments - I don't know why but the idea both repulsed me and induced hilarity. Anyway,

Point 2, on p138 of U Eco's 'Travels in Hyperreality' we have,

"The communication chain assumes a Source that, through a Transmitter, emits a Signal via a Channel. At the end of the Channel the Signal, through a Receiver, is transformed into a Message for the Addressee. Since the Signal, while traveling through the Channel, can be disturbed by Noise, one must make the Message redundant, so that the information is transmitted clearly. But the other fundamental requirement of this chain is a Code shared, by the Source and the Addressee. A Code is an established system of probabilities, and only on the basis of the Code can we decide whether the elements of the message are intentional (desired by the Source) or the result of Noise."

The Channel through which Mason is communicating is the mainstream BBC.

I think thickie-leaks, mobile-phone-atrocity-porn from mysterious demonstrators are attempts at communicating via a Channel that supposedly has more integrity than the MSM/BBC Channel. Thickie-leaks must be true because Bradley Manning has been jailed and is being tortured, right? Surely, these atrocity porn mobile phone pictures are true because it isn't as though the MSM has produced them, right?

I see these as attempts at maintaining media control in view of and in full knowledge of what Mason is saying.

I had the strangest sensation of having just read a piece of journalism after finishing Mason's post

though I probably didn't feel half as a strange as Mason did when he finished writing it

Have to say Mason is the best of the bunch.
Always looks slightly out of place with the urbane Flanders/Peston types.
Gave a good speech here

You're a harsh man, Zucconni

Stef said...

Not so much harsh as constrained by the limits of my intellectual capacities

I realise that it is theoretically possible for matter to exist simultaneously as a BBC frontperson and as a slightly better than awful human being without the universe imploding as a consequence

But when I try and imagine what such a creature would be like I get all dizzy and find myself needing a wee lie down

...I've downloaded that speech and will score some psychotropics on the way home to accompany it

"that speech" did it for me too. Anyone who cites Mario can't be all that bad.

Anyway, if he has the curiosity of an old school journalist he may drop by ... since,

"gyges01
@paulmasonnews you've hit the BIG time, a mention as an honorary conspiraloon, see bit.ly/j4kbxv
"

Who could not be intrigued to read this in their twitter stream, esp the all caps big.

"One in the eye for the anti-masonic faction"

clearly Mason must have joined the BBC after Mi5 ceased
"counter-subversion vetting"
of BBC staff

I'm not sure when the vetting stopped exactly, but definitely after that

I hope Mason does drop by: it reminds me of the time that Bob Carolgees visited the services.

I hope there isn't some Northbound/Southbound cock up. He should be here by now, writing prose of praise for us all!!!!

Spot on.

The broadcast media Transmitters, attempting to buy credibility through the overly detested Channel of 'citizen journalism', to Addressees who are already wise to the manner in which the rules of the game have changed.
